Callie thought she heard someone running, but as she looked at Aiden, she realised it was his heart. He began breathing heavily, and she could sense the rage suddenly appear within him. Never had she heard someone’s heart pump this fast.

“Aiden, don’t,” Callie found herself whispering, grappling Aiden’s hands in her own, but Aiden remained silent, in a trance, as the Dark Witch continued to speak.

“That’s right, on a night not too dissimilar to this, I came to your house where I found you as a baby. Your mother and I fought, I lost my powers for a few years but she lost her life.” A tormenting laugh filled the cool air.

“I am going to kill it,” said Aiden, breaking his silence. Callie turned Aiden’s head to face hers so he was looking into her eyes.

“Aiden, I’m sorry, but you can’t. You jump out, the Dark Witch will capture you, and who knows what will happen. Please… they are only provoking you.” They looked into each other’s eyes. Despite his eyes being filled with angry tears, he was able to look past his smeared vision and look Callie in the eyes. She was scared.

“Okay,” he whispered weakly, feeling he was doing a great dishonor to his mother. He wanted to jump out and fight the witch – kill it. Was this why his father hadn’t told him about his mother’s death? Because it was a witch? There were so many questions, but as Aiden looked at Callie who was looking around, all he knew was that he had to get out of there alive with her.

“I have an idea. The Dark Witch is tracking your blood like a vampire, so we just have to overload them.” Callie stared at a distraught and speechless Aiden, hoping for a response, but he remained numb. “Just stay here,” she murmured before she disappeared.

In the darkness of the night, Aiden saw her appear and disappear, hiding behind hay bales, ready to enact her plan. Running through the field, Callie started to slit the throats of the cows. The cows fell to the ground, blood oozing from their necks. Aiden grimaced. He didn’t like a plan that killed innocent animals, but he knew it was their only chance to get away.

The Dark Witch started to move, watching the bodies of the cows drop to the ground. Callie’s plan was working. The witch was becoming confused by the overpowering stench of blood. Killing five cows in total, Callie returned to Aiden, her hands and clothes drenched in blood. A foul stench of rotten meat bombarded Aiden, making it almost impossible for him to breath. Callie leant against the hardened hay bale, listening to the Dark Witch move around furiously.

A loud echoing shriek erupted from the Dark Witch, it was as if two sharp pieces of metal were being dragged against one another. Callie and Aiden covered their ears, protecting them against the deafening sound. As it stopped, Callie spoke, “Let’s go.” Aiden nodded, jumping on her back once again.
